Teaching adults at Cambridge School of English
The vast majority of adult language learners who contact our language school say they want to focus on improving their spoken English. Our courses, syllabi and teaching programs are therefore based on a communicative approach. This approach prioritizes speaking and highlights that the language is primarily needed in its spoken form in a number of social situations.
At Cambridge School of English, language practice is at the centre of our attention. Learning useful phrases, functional language, everyday expressions, useful vocabulary and grammar enable our students to master many skills. We focus on negotiating in English, solving problems, and communicating information precisely. Our students become confident in using English as a foreign language.
The success behind Cambridge School of English
At Cambridge School of English we make every effort to meet our students’ expectations and enable them to learn fast and effectively.
The groups are small, from just 2 up to maximum of 9 students. A limited class size supports effective learning, as students are more engaged and study in comfortable conditions.
English language lessons are well thought-out and adapted to learners’ interests. During the course all language skills are practised and developed simultaneously – speaking, writing, listening and reading. In each class teachers introduce new vocabulary and repeat materials from previous meetings, for example through games and role-play.
Speaking is key to improving and feeling more in command in a foreign language. Therefore, discussions, role plays, presentations, negotiations, and speeches are essential components of every lesson.
With their knowledge of various learning styles and kinds of intelligence, our teachers implement various activities suitable for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. Lessons are enriched with additional materials such as articles, videos, language games and vocabulary exercises, complementing what students learn in their textbooks.
We start with a two-step process to verify a student’s level of proficiency in English. First, the student is asked to complete a written test which aims to determine their command of grammar structures and the range of their vocabulary. Second, the student has a conversation with the Academic Manager, who aims to assess their level precisely and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. It is of crucial importance to discuss the student’s language aims and expectations to ensure that the course is tailored to their needs.
Each lesson will give you a chance to improve your communication skills and practise speaking in the language you want to master. Students are encouraged to be creative and express their ideas freely and spontaneously with a variety of activities. In this way we break the language barrier which often causes problems for students.
English language lessons are conducted in the target language, and Polish is used only occasionally in exceptional situations when translation is absolutely unavoidable.
Students’ progress is measured by regular tests and assignments; the material is revised on a regular basis to ensure it is understood by everyone.
